Dia Numero Dos

En el segundo dia, nosotros conocimos! Before leaving Atlanta, we had searched Trip Advisor to find a couple of fun things to do in Valparaiso. Beyond the typical site-seeing, we found a Chilean Cuisine cooking class that had received incredible ratings, so we thought we would give it a try. It was a GREAT choice. We started with a trip to the local market, where we shopped with our Chef, Andres, to find all of the ingredients for the four course meal that we would prepare. First was the fish stand. Local fresh fish, Reymente?, were available for 500 pesos per kilo ($1 US!). These would be used in our ceviche, combined with fresh cilantro, lemons, onions and green & red peppers. Next we moved to the fresh produce, which was even less expensive and just as fresh and delicious. As our classmate Jeff told us, you can purchase two large bags of fresh produce, enough for 2+ dinners, for less than $5. After finishing our shopping we returned to the classroom to create our dishes. Four hours later, four rounds of Pisco sours, fresh ceviche, fresh Chilean salsa, a casserole(ish) dish, empanadas, and a cherimoya dessert were prepared and enjoyed with a few bottles of nice Chilean wine. The day turned out to be even more fun than we had expected. We learned about Chilean culture, music, and cuisine from a wonderful host, Andres, and met some great travelers from Britain, Canada and the USA. We finished the day by inviting our new friends from class over to share a few bottles of wine on our hotel's balcony and discussed traveling long into the night(Note to self: add India, Nepal, and Columbia to the list, folowed by a cruise to Antartica). Before we knew it, it was 130am and time for bed. Tomorrow is a big day!
